What It Is
The Public Domain Image Archive (PDIA) is a curated collection of more than 10,000 out-of-copyright historical images, launched in January 2025 by The Public Domain Review (PDR). It spans 2,000+ years of visual culture from 200+ source institutions worldwide — galleries, libraries, archives, and museums.
Launched on Public Domain Day 2025, the PDIA is a sister project to the PDR, an online journal dedicated to exploring curious and compelling works from the history of art, literature, and ideas. The PDR is registered in the UK as a Community Interest Company (#11386184).
Three Views
- Catalogue View — Traditional search and browse by artist, century, style, theme, and tags
- Infinite View — A 360° scrollable, immersive image exploration interface. Users can pan in any direction through an endless grid of artwork. Built with Astro + Svelte, renders images in a full-viewport canvas with transform-based positioning
- Shuffle View — Serendipitous random image summoner, likened to a "three-card tarot spread"
Team
- Adam Green — Editor
- Hunter Dukes — Editor

Curatorial Philosophy
The images are hand-picked highlights, not a bulk dump. The PDR's editorial eye is the filter:
"The PDIA collates images that tap into the spirit of the PDR project: to celebrate the surprising, the strange, and the beautiful in the history of art, literature, and ideas."
Most images have been through careful editing: rotation, exposure correction, and cropping from book scans to isolate illustrations that don't otherwise exist online as standalone images.
The PDIA "functions as a database of images featured in the PDR, offering an image-first approach to exploring the project's content." Each image links back to the PDR article where it appeared, and to the source institution.
Rights and Usage
- Images are public domain (copyright expired), deemed free to reuse even commercially
- No additional rights claims from PDIA or source institutions
- Some exceptions for jurisdiction-specific copyright (e.g., US-only public domain)
- Metadata is CC BY-NC (images themselves are unrestricted)
- No attribution required, but appreciated
Funding
Entirely donation-supported. No external funding, no advertising. Print sales (~20% of images) provide additional revenue.

"Whether you're a researcher, an artist, a designer, or simply a lover of old images, we hope you find the PDIA to be a source of inspiration and delight. Explore, download, and create to your heart's content!"
"We believe in a cultural commons where public domain works are accessible to all."
