Simon reports that xAI's grok CLI tool faced significant community backlash after it was discovered that running the command in a directory would upload the "entire directory" to xAI's Google Cloud buckets. One user shared that running it from their home directory caused uploads of "SSH keys, my password manager database, my documents, photos, videos, everything."
No official explanation was provided for why this occurred, but xAI responded. Elon Musk stated: "As a precautionary measure, all user data that was uploaded to SpaceXAI before now will be completely and utterly deleted." The feature was subsequently disabled.
A few hours later, xAI released the entire Grok Build codebase under an Apache 2.0 license, which Willison suggests was an attempt to rebuild trust. The post quotes xAI's announcement thread, which said: "When data upload was disabled, this choice was respected." It also mentioned that for early beta users, "data retention was enabled by default for non-ZDR users" but that this was changed based on feedback.
The announcement continued: "With all retained data deleted, retention default off, and an open-source harness, we are offering complete user privacy." It noted users can "run Grok Build fully open-sourced and local-first with your own inference." Default retention was disabled starting July 12th, and all previously retained coding data was deleted.
Willison describes the codebase as "quite a surprising" one, containing 844,530 lines of Rust (using his SLOCCount tool), with only about 3% being vendored. The repo has a single commit so far, offering no insight into development history.
apply_patch, grep_files, list_dir, and read_dir, plus OpenCode tools including bash, edit, glob, grep, read, skill, todowrite, and write. A third-party notices file indicates these were "ported from" those projects in a license-compliant manner.upload_session_state() function returning a hard-coded error indicating unavailability. For comparison, OpenAI's Codex is 950,933 lines of Rust. Willison concludes that "terminal coding agents are significantly more complex than I had realized." He also links to a Claude Code chat transcript where he explored the repo interactively.
